Because of our exceptional weather year-round, there’s always something fun to do in Del Mar. Our locale near the beach, with plenty of parks and hiking trails nearby, makes for endless activities to do with the whole family.
Whether you’re planning a weekend getaway or visiting for just a day, Del Mar offers a little something for everyone. Family time is precious, but sometimes it’s okay to split up for a few hours in order to keep the peace. When that’s the case, here are our top picks for each member of the family:
If Dad’s passion is hanging ten, then he can easily spend the entire day catching waves at any of Del Mar’s famed beaches. If he’s more terrestrial than amphibious, he can make a tee time at the award-winning Torrey Pines Golf Course, just a few miles south of Del Mar, and play the same 18 holes as many championship golfers including Tiger Woods.
While Dad is out on the green (or in the deep blue), Mom can spend her alone time getting pampered. The spa at L’Auberge Del Mar is named one of Condé Nast Traveler’s Top 25 Spas in the US for a reason. From personalized treatments to luxurious services, Mom can enjoy total relaxation in a calming, ocean-inspired atmosphere. Once the appointment is over, she can head over to the Village to do a little shopping before meeting back up with the rest of the family.
Young children can be active and go a little crazy (with some adult supervision, of course) during their stay in Del Mar. Places like Powerhouse Park are safe environments for kids to run around and have fun. Surf lessons are also offered year-round, or kids can grab a club and play a round of mini golf at Pelly’s.
Because Del Mar is a safe, seacoast town, parents can feel comfortable letting their teens check out the Village or head to the beach on their own. There are tennis and basketball courts on the east side of Coast Boulevard, where they can work up a sweat. Or, you can drive your teen on over to Cinepolis Luxury Cinemas, where they can spend a few hours watching the latest Hollywood film from the comfort of a leather recliner.
When it’s time to come back together, here are some activities that can be enjoyed as a group:
- Choose from the Surfin’ Safari or Ocean Adventure courses at Pelly’s Mini Golf and have a competition to see who can get the best score.
- Take a scenic hike or visit Free Flight bird sanctuary to get in touch with nature.
- During racing season (late summer and late fall), the entire family can get dressed up to visit the Del Mar Thoroughbred Club to (watch Mom and Dad) bet on the ponies.
- In late June and early July, the family can fill up on the fair, interact with farm animals, experience the thrill of a few carnival rides and maybe even catch a free concert during the San Diego County Fair, held at the Del Mar Fairgrounds.
If you’re visiting or planning a trip in December, do your holiday shopping in the Village. If you spend $75 at participating stores before January 1st, you can receive a $15 dining voucher to use at any participating Del Mar Village restaurant. With so many restaurant options to choose from, you can easily create a special family night out with dinner and a seaside view.
