Celebrate the Planet in Del Mar on Earth Day
This April 22nd will be the 38th celebration of Earth Day, a day to honor the Earth and the concept of peace. Over 193 countries host Earth Day events, and you can join the celebrations right here in Del Mar!
Lagoon Day
On the day before Earth Day, Saturday, April 21, the Del Mar San Dieguito Lagoon Committee is hosting a day of family-friendly events from 8:30am to 2pm at the Birdwing Open Air Classroom, located east of San Andres and just below Via de la Valle. Starting at 8:30am, a guide will lead interested participants on a bird walk. At 11am, Sky Hunters will present live native raptors. This will be followed by three hours of events including art projects, hands-on science, and animal identification games. Admission is free and participants may drop in at any time.
Picnic in the Great Outdoors
Perhaps your idea of celebrating Earth Day involves getting out and enjoying nature. How about treating yourself to one of Mother Nature’s best playgrounds and making your taste buds happy at the same time? Alongside Del Mar’s pristine beaches, the oceanfront Powerhouse and Seagrove parks offer expansive lawns, picnic tables and benches with breathtaking views. Let one of the award-winning restaurants in the Village cater your picnic – many offer to-go orders from their menus. Local favorites include Board and Brew which has been a Del Mar institution for nearly 40 years. It’s a perfect stop for picking up sandwiches for your picnic and Craft Burrito Co. located on the corner of 15th St. and Camino Del Mar has 15 signature burritos from which to choose.
Planting Event at the River Path in Del Mar
The San Dieguito River Valley Conservancy preserves, protects, and shares the natural and cultural resources of the San Dieguito River Valley. On Saturday, April 21 from 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM volunteers are invited to help with the SDRVC’s continued efforts to restore the San Dieguito Lagoon with native plants. Just bring your enthusiasm and sweat equity.Register here
L’Auberge Del Mar joins Destination Earth
L’Auberge Del Mar is participating in Earth Day by “turning down the power” on April 22 at sunset. They will dim all the lights in the lobby and around certain areas of the hotel for an hour. Guests can participate voluntarily, by turning off lights, a/c, cell phones, television, radio or anything at all that requires the use of power for a portion of the evening. Locals and visitors enjoying the resort are encouraged to relax, watch the sun dip into the Pacific, listen to the sounds of the ocean, visit with family & friends and breath in the refreshing night air.
Del Mar Civic Center
As the unveiling of the new Del Mar Civic center approaches, the City of Del Mar has seen to it that the new facility offers numerous sustainable and Earth-friendly features including a high-efficiency exterior building envelope, low energy lighting that balances with natural light, plentiful natural light with solar shading, a high-efficiency HVAC system that incorporates natural ventilation when appropriate, as well as a 64 KW photovoltaic solar system. Municipal recycled water will be in use and the landscaping will incorporate drip irrigation and bioretention. You can find more information about exploring Del Mar Village at visitdelmarvillage.com
