Discover Spring in the Village
For those not lucky enough to live in San Diego year-round, it may seem like we don’t have seasons here at all, but when the days start getting longer, you can definitely see the signs that spring is here.
The Ocean
The water is getting warmer and the gray whales are returning to Alaska. Each year an estimated 20,000 whales make a 10,000-mile round-trip journey from Alaska to the lagoons of Baja California. The Del Mar coastline is directly in the migration path and pods can be spotted from shore. The Scripps Bluff Preserve offers a perfect lookout.
The Flowers
The tangerine colored California Poppy is just about to burst on the scene. Look to fields and natural open spaces for blankets of the California state flower. The Coast to Crest Trail extends (with some interruptions) from the ocean right here in Del Mar through the San Dieguito River preserve, all the way to Volcan Mountain near Julian. That is some 70 miles of trails, so you may want to stop at Viewpoint Brewing Co. for some nourishment overlooking the trail and San Dieguito Lagoon before or after your journey. Easter is the unofficial start to spring and many of the Village businesses gear up with special offerings for the holiday. L’Auberge Del Mar hosts Sand Dollar Coloring and an Easter Egg Hunt in the Amphitheater. Many of the restaurants are serving Easter brunch.
