Ways To Celebrate the Summer Solstice

Each June, the summer solstice occurs when the earth is tilted as far as possible toward the sun. This results in the longest day of the year for everywhere north of the Tropic of Cancer, which can occur anytime from June 20-22. Although it’s not an official holiday, it can really feel like a day to celebrate, especially as it puts the short, cold days of winter squarely in the rear view. Celebrating the summer solstice is a great way to mark the point at which summer is really in full swing.

Here are just a few ways to make the most of it:

  • Take a trip along the Pacific Coast Highway. Also known as Highway 1 or CA1, this historic scenic highway stretches from San Francisco to San Diego. It features jaw-dropping views of the ocean on one side and towering cliffs, trees, and sky on the other. You’ll encounter surfing towns, local wines, and fresh produce stands as you go, and there’s no better way to enjoy summer vibes the California way.

  • Check out a local festival. Nothing says summer like wandering lazily through a summer festival with a cold beverage in hand. Festivals offer a sample of all things joyful and carefree: upbeat music, delicious local eats, inspiring arts and crafts, live performances, excellent people-watching, and more.

  • Dine on a restaurant patio. June is a great month for patio dining, as in most of North America, it’s not yet too hot to enjoy doing so. Consider a fresh summer salad, tacos, small plates, ice cream, a colorful cocktail made with summer produce, and more to get a real bite (and sip) of the sunny season.

  • Attend a beach party. When it comes to enjoying the warm months, nothing beats a good day or evening on the beach. Hold your own party or attend a local beach event; these can involve concerts, sandcastle contests, volleyball, surfing, or food and wine tasting. Some of these community events come with the chance to score a commemorative glass or other item, which you can use to hold happy memories throughout the year.
